My Experience as a Coding Judge
Some weeks ago, I had the opportunity to be a Judge for the #Code4Girls competition organized by HapaSpace for Senior High School students to build websites using HTML and CSS. This was under the Google CS4HS initiative. Participating students came from schools all over Ghana to showcase their coding skills and also win amazing prizes.
What made this more exciting for me was the fact that I was part of the team that tutored some of the girls last year. Almost all of them had no coding experience by then; so was impressive to see how they had sharpened their skills to work on web projects on their own.
As a judge, the criteria for scoring teams included:
- Website Design
- Functionalities
- Team Work
- Presentation Skills
- Code Readability
- Code Quality
At the end of the day, Ahantaman SHS won the competition for building a beautiful educational website within 3 hours. They went extra mile to learn and use Bootstrap in their codes which made their websites stand out. St. Monica’s SHS and St. Louis SHS came out as 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up respectively. All participating schools took home a prize of a laptop and a projector to help aid their various ICT clubs in their respective schools.
It was a very nice experience at the end of it all, volunteering as a Judge. I look forward to more of such programs and I say a big thank you Developers in Vogue and HapaSpace for giving me this opportunity.
