Youth, Let’s Create The Future (YouthLab)
The aim of the AU-EU YouthLab was to bring together the best ideas of young, digital innovators and entrepreneurs from Africa and Europe and to jointly develop a set of concrete recommendations for policy makers and business leaders from both continents. This initiative was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.
Our ecosystem meetup took place on 28th October at Impact Hub Accra. After briefings, we had an icebreaker moment where participants introduced themselves and then shared a fun fact. The most interesting we think, was from Abdul who mentioned that he only sleeps in the afternoons because he can’t sleep at night.
Participants were then introduced to the Word Cloud technology, where they were asked to reflect on the theme: ‘How can we support young innovators in founding and accelerating digital organizations and companies for working and living?’
They were also divided into four groups, with each group being supported by an industry expert. In groups, they brainstormed and discussed their ideas with the aim of refining them ahead of the presentations. The experts provided each team with feedback during this session.
Each team was given 3 minutes to present their ideas, after which they answered questions from the jury. The scoring criteria for ideas included viability, scalability and team. From the recommendations of judges and general performance of participants, representatives of A Day in Virtual Reality (using a virtual box and a smart phone to teach students Science in virtual reality) and Girl Code It (making technology more attractive to African girls) represented Ghana at the AU-EU Summit in Abidjan. In Abidjan, they had the opportunity to present their initiatives to policy makers and business leaders.
